(The Foothills History - obtained from www.gotoyuma.com)
In 1949 when Hank first came to Arizona, no one, including Hank, had any idea what was in store for the area 12 miles east of town that would be come known as "THE FOOTHILLS." When Hank first arrived in Yuma, he started Western Fashions, a western clothing store, which he owned for almost 10 years. In the meantime, he also bought and ran a TV and appliance store. He also went into partnership with Glen Gartland and they started Gartland Jewelers. He even owned a local radio station for a while. Hank's next venture was to get interested in real estate in 1958 and one year later he received his broker license. In 1960, Hank left Yuma and went to Phoenix but not before he purchased 160 acres where his current office is and another 320 acre parcel at the Fortuna overpass. Even while he was in Phoenix he continued to purchase Yuma AZ Real Estate in The Foothills until he had approximately 3,000 acres. In 1967, Hank moved to The Foothills and put a mobile home on his land and started to develop and sell lots. Many people in Yuma who were aware of what he was doing thought he was making a serious mistake and that he must have lost a marble or two. The area was known for a short time as "Hank's Folly." Little did they know that his experiences in Alaska and Phoenix gave him great insight into just what could develop here with lots of work and determination. He would let the air out of tires on his car and drive around the desert for hours picturing an area where people could live and enjoy the climate and the desert. He would sit on top of the little hills in the area, look out over the desert, and dream of what is now happening here. The First subdivision was at Foothills Boulevard and 40th Street and the acres lots sold for $1295 and $1495. Hank has sold over 8000 lots in The Foothills, with approximately 6500 left to develop on 1700 acres located at the base of the Foothills Mountains east of Fortuna Wash. In addition to the residential and RV lots in this area, plans also include an 18 hole regulation golf course, medical clinic, retirement home, commercial facilities, etc. The first commercial piece of property was sold by Hank to Arco for a gas station where Barney's is currently located. Mesa del Sol also purchased a part of their land from Hank and little by little more and more people began to arrive and live in The Foothills. Now approximately 10,000 full time residents live in The Foothills and over 40,000 people reside here during the winter season.
